Citizen Sense is an interdisciplinary research project that draws on science and technology studies (STS), digital media studies, creative practice (art, architecture and design), environmental studies and geography, and feminist technoscience.

Jennifer Gabrys

Principal Investigator

Jennifer Gabrys is Reader in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Principal Investigator on the European Research Council starting grant, “Citizen Sensing and Environmental Practice: Assessing Participatory Engagements with Environments through Sensor Technologies.” Prior to joining the Department of Sociology, she was Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the MA in Design and Environment in the Department of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London. Helen Pritchard

Researcher

Helen Pritchard is an artist and researcher whose interdisciplinary work brings together the fields of Computational Aesthetics, Software Studies, Environmental Practice, Feminist TechnoScience and New Feminist Materialisms. Her practice is both one of writing and making and these two modes mutually inform each other in order to consider the impact of computational regimes. Central to her work is the consideration of material practices of more-than-humans, co-research, participation and the performativity of code in computational ecologies. Read more

Lara Houston

Postdoctoral Researcher

Lara Houston is a sociologist and ethnographer interested in the politics and poetics of information technology infrastructures. One strand of her work explores practices of maintenance and repair. Beginning at the point where artefacts or systems are unravelling invites different insights about the work of living with and sustaining technologies (or choosing not to). Her ethnography of mobile phone repair in downtown Kampala, Uganda began as a dissertation at Lancaster University, UK (funded by a Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship) and was extended through a Postdoctoral position at Cornell University, USA.
